A group of Maharashtra residents who were stranded in flood-hit parts of Nepal has been safely evacuated and has now begun its journey back to Maharashtra, the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.
The residents were among those caught in Nepal amid difficult conditions caused by flooding and disruptions to transportation. Their evacuation was carried out through coordination between the Maharashtra government and authorities involved in bringing stranded Indian citizens back to safety.
After reaching India, the Maharashtra residents spoke to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis through a video call. They expressed their appreciation to the state government for intervening and coordinating arrangements for their return.
The CMO said the citizens thanked the Government of Maharashtra and the Chief Minister’s Office for their prompt response and continued efforts during the crisis. The interaction also gave the residents an opportunity to share their relief after finally reaching India.
During the conversation, Fadnavis said the Centre had played an important role in facilitating their evacuation. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar for ensuring that assistance reached the stranded Maharashtra residents.
Fadnavis told the citizens that their safe evacuation had been made possible through timely intervention and coordination at multiple levels. He also highlighted the arrangements made to ensure that the affected passengers could continue their journey towards Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra CMO later confirmed through a post on X that the stranded citizens had reached India safely and were proceeding towards the state.
Earlier Rescue Efforts For Maharashtra Passengers
The latest development follows a series of efforts by the Maharashtra government to bring back residents stranded in Nepal.
On August 27, Fadnavis had spoken directly with Maharashtra residents who were still stranded in Nepal. He assured them that the state government would take all possible measures to facilitate their safe return.
The CMO subsequently said that 106 passengers from Nagpur had safely left Kathmandu for Danapur in Bihar.
Following a telephone conversation with Fadnavis, Nepal MP Sandeep Rana reportedly arranged four local mini-buses to transport the passengers from Kathmandu towards Janakpur.
The passengers were expected to travel to the Janakpur-Bihar border, where further transport arrangements had been made for their onward journey to Danapur. From there, arrangements were also made for their return to Maharashtra by train.
The coordinated evacuation comes as authorities continue assisting Indian citizens affected by difficult travel conditions in parts of Nepal.
