The Delhi Police on Friday registered an FIR over a complaint filed by 19-year-old Sahil Lochab, who alleged that he suffered a pellet gun injury during a student protest in Delhi on July 20.
The FIR was registered after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi staged a dharna outside the Parliament Street police station, demanding action on Lochab’s complaint.
Gandhi was accompanied by Lochab and his mother during the protest. Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, also joined the sit-in.
Lochab had earlier approached the police with a written complaint alleging that he was injured during the protest. He said he underwent treatment at Lady Hardinge Hospital before being referred to AIIMS, where he underwent surgery.
Speaking at the police station, Lochab said, “I underwent surgery at AIIMS. But the vision in my eye is still not clear.”
Rahul Gandhi had earlier said he would not leave the protest site until the FIR was registered. He also accused the authorities of failing to act on Lochab’s complaint despite it being submitted on August 14.
The Congress has alleged that the student was injured after police allegedly used pellet guns during the protest. However, the police have denied using such weapons.
The FIR has been registered against unidentified persons, and the investigation will now focus on establishing the circumstances surrounding Lochab’s injury and identifying those responsible.
