‘Their Demands Are Legitimate’: Rahul Gandhi Urges Hemant Soren to Personally Meet Jharkhand Protesters

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has asked Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to personally meet students protesting alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations and work towards resolving their remaining concerns.

Gandhi’s intervention came as the student agitation entered its 24th day, with six protesters continuing an indefinite hunger strike. The Congress leader’s letter was sent a day after Soren invited the protesting students for another round of discussions.

The development comes amid growing frustration among the protesters, who have accused the Jharkhand government of failing to take concrete action on their demands.

Why Are Jharkhand Students Protesting?

Students in Jharkhand have been protesting over alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations.

The protesters are demanding action from the government and want their concerns regarding the recruitment process to be addressed.

The agitation has continued for more than three weeks despite attempts by the state government to engage with the students.

According to Gandhi, the students’ protests have remained peaceful and their demands are “legitimate.”

Rahul Gandhi Asks Soren to Meet Students Directly

In his letter to Soren, Gandhi suggested that the Chief Minister should personally sit down with representatives of the protesting students.

“I am writing to suggest that you personally meet with representatives of the protesting students,” Gandhi said.

According to Gandhi, such a meeting would send a strong message that the government was serious about resolving the issue.

He said a direct interaction between the Chief Minister and the students could help address the concerns that remain unresolved.

Soren Had Already Invited Protesters for Talks

Gandhi’s letter came shortly after Soren invited the protesting students for another meeting at 2 pm on Monday.

The Jharkhand government has already initiated discussions through a committee constituted by Soren.

Gandhi acknowledged this effort and said there appeared to be agreement between the government and students on several of their demands.

However, he pointed out that the protest had not ended because some issues were still unresolved.

“However, the protests continue, and some students remain on an indefinite hunger strike,” Gandhi said.

Six Students Continue Hunger Strike

The protest has now entered its 24th day, while six students are continuing an indefinite hunger strike.

An indefinite hunger strike means the protesters have stopped eating for an extended period to press the government to accept their demands.

The continuation of the hunger strike has added urgency to the situation, with Gandhi asking the state government to engage directly with the students.

Protesters Burn Effigies of Rahul Gandhi and Soren

The Congress leader’s intervention comes despite the protesters recently expressing anger against the ruling alliance.

Demonstrators reportedly burnt effigies of Hemant Soren, Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.

The protesters accused the JMM-Congress alliance of failing to take what they described as concrete action on their demands.

This makes Gandhi’s latest appeal significant because he is now publicly backing the students’ right to protest while asking his political ally, Soren, to personally intervene.

Rahul Gandhi Defends Right to Protest

Gandhi said peaceful demonstrations are an important part of India’s democratic system.

“The Congress party believes that the right to peaceful protest as enshrined in the Constitution of India is one of the central pillars of our democracy,” he said.

He also said Congress had supported student movements in the past when they involved allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in the education system.

Gandhi Raises Larger Education Concerns

Gandhi also expanded his criticism beyond the Jharkhand recruitment controversy.

He accused the BJP and RSS of contributing to what he described as a deterioration of India’s education system.

According to Gandhi, the education system had been turned into a “tool for the exploitation and oppression of students”.

These remarks bring a wider political dimension to the Jharkhand student protest, as the Congress MP connected the current recruitment dispute with his broader criticism of the education system.

‘Youth of India Is Its Future’

Gandhi said young people are central to India’s future and called for support for the protesting students.

“The youth of India is its future. We owe them our solidarity and support at this moment of crisis,” Gandhi said.

He urged Soren to listen directly to the students and take appropriate steps to settle their outstanding concerns.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus is now on the fresh round of talks between the Jharkhand government and the protesting students.

With the agitation continuing for 24 days and six protesters on an indefinite hunger strike, pressure is mounting for a solution.

Soren’s government has already opened dialogue through a committee, but the continuation of the protest indicates that important differences remain.

Rahul Gandhi’s intervention could add further pressure on the Jharkhand government, particularly because he has publicly asked Soren to personally meet the students.

The outcome of the next meeting could determine whether the long-running protest moves towards a settlement or continues.
