A fatal road accident in Delhi’s Narela has raised questions over possible drunk driving after a video from the crash site appeared to show a man identifying a bottle found inside a Mercedes as “beer”. The accident, which took place on the morning of August 8, left a 70-year-old woman dead and three members of another family injured.
The collision occurred around 8–8:30 am near Gate No. 1 of Himalaya Apartments in the Mamurpur area, where a silver Mercedes-Benz E-Class allegedly crashed head-on into a Maruti WagonR.
‘Beer Hai’: Bottle Found Inside Mercedes
A video recorded after the crash appears to show a bottle inside the Mercedes. When asked what the bottle was, a man is heard saying, “Beer hai.”
Police also reportedly recovered liquor bottles from the vehicle. However, authorities have not yet officially established that the Mercedes driver was intoxicated when the accident occurred.
A blood sample from the driver has been collected and sent for forensic testing. The report is expected to establish whether alcohol was present in his system at the time of the collision.
70-Year-Old Woman Dies After Being Trapped
According to the preliminary police account, the Mercedes and WagonR were travelling in opposite directions when they collided.
The force of the impact reportedly pushed the WagonR backwards into a stationary three-wheeler nearby.
A 70-year-old woman, identified as Urmila, was reportedly in the area to feed pigeons when she became trapped between the WagonR and the parked vehicle. She sustained critical injuries and died while being taken to hospital.
The WagonR occupants, identified in reports as Narender Kumar and Geeta, along with their young daughter, were injured in the crash. They were taken to hospital for treatment.
Mercedes Driver Taken Into Custody
Police identified the Mercedes driver as Shubham Sharma, a Narela resident. Reports said he had returned from a party with friends before the crash.
Police apprehended him at the accident site and subsequently took him into custody. He was medically examined as part of the investigation.
Outer North District DCP Amit Kaushik said the driver’s sobriety was questionable and confirmed that liquor had been recovered from the vehicle.
CCTV, Eyewitness Statements Under Investigation
An FIR has been registered at Narela police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage and recording statements from people who witnessed the crash. The forensic examination of the driver’s blood sample is also awaited.
If the laboratory report establishes that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, police could invoke additional provisions relating to drunk driving.
The allegation of intoxication has not been conclusively established yet, and the investigation remains ongoing.
