BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla Quits Party, Cites Personal Reasons: Report

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has reportedly stepped down from the Bharatiya Janata Party, citing personal reasons, according to a News18 report. While there has been no official confirmation from either the BJP or Poonawalla, the development has sparked political discussions, particularly after changes were noticed on his social media profile.

A day before reports of his resignation surfaced, Poonawalla updated his bio on X, describing himself as, “Religion~Islam, Culture~Hindu, Ideology~Bhartiya; Author: GST Ki Yatra; Lifelong follower of PM @narendramodi.” The profile change drew attention on social media, although he did not indicate any decision regarding his political future.

At the time of publication, Shehzad Poonawalla had not issued any public statement explaining his reported resignation. Efforts to seek his response were also unsuccessful, and the BJP has not released an official statement on the matter.

Political Journey

Born on October 17, 1987, in Pune, Maharashtra, Shehzad Poonawalla studied at the MIT School of Government (MIT-SOG). He began his political career with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) before becoming associated with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) media cell. He is also the brother of political commentator Tehseen Poonawalla.

Poonawalla came into the national spotlight in 2017 after publicly criticising the Congress leadership over internal democracy and dynastic politics during the election of Rahul Gandhi as party president.

He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, where he emerged as one of the party’s prominent television faces. As BJP’s national spokesperson, he regularly participated in televised political debates and represented the party on major national issues. In 2021, he was also appointed in charge of the BJP’s Delhi social media unit.

While reports suggest that Poonawalla has resigned from the BJP for personal reasons, the exact circumstances surrounding his decision remain unclear. Further details are awaited, and an official confirmation from the party or the leader is yet to be issued.
