Upgraded hospitals will have 30 beds, operation theatres, modern equipment and expanded medical staff
Nine Primary Health Centres in Sindhudurg have been upgraded to Rural Hospitals, with their capacity set to increase from seven to 30 beds. The government has also approved ₹37.37 crore for new PHC and health sub-centre buildings across the district.
Sindhudurgnagari : Nine Primary Health Centres in Sindhudurg district have been upgraded to Rural Hospitals as part of an initiative to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to medical services in rural areas. Sindhudurg currently has 38 Primary Health Centres. The PHCs at Mithbav, Shirgaon, Padel, Kasarde, Phonda, Kharepatan, Masure, Banda and Mangaon have now been accorded Rural Hospital status.
The government has also approved ₹37.37 crore for the construction of new buildings for 18 Primary Health Centres and 17 Health Sub-Centres across the district. Several existing health centre buildings and staff quarters have become old and structurally unsafe. The proposed construction and renovation work is intended to provide safer medical facilities and better residential accommodation for doctors and other healthcare personnel.
The shortage and absence of doctors and medical staff at rural health centres have remained persistent concerns in Sindhudurg. Officials expect improved infrastructure and residential facilities to encourage healthcare personnel to remain at their assigned locations and ensure more consistent services for residents.
District Health Officer Dr Sai Dhuri said the nine upgraded Rural Hospitals would see a substantial expansion in their capacity and services. Their bed capacity will increase from seven to 30. The hospitals are also expected to receive operation theatres, modern medical equipment, essential medicines, additional staff and improved accommodation for patients.
Under the 15th Finance Commission, ₹10.37 crore has been earmarked for constructing 17 Health Sub-Centres. The district administration has forwarded the proposal to the Commissioner for approval. Each proposed Health Sub-Centre has been allocated ₹61 lakh. The locations mentioned in the proposal include Kusur, Salshi, Natal, Tarkarli, Vados, Gothos, Jambhavade, Ghodge, Kanyal, Mochemad, Karli, Choukul, Malgaon, Danoli, Talavade and Tillari.
Separately, ₹1.5 crore has been allocated for each of the proposed 18 Primary Health Centre buildings. The proposal has also been submitted to the Commissioner for approval. The PHCs covered under the proposal are Ilaye, Shirgaon and Padel in Devgad taluka; Kharepatan and Nandgaon in Kankavli; Chauke, Hivale and Masure in Malvan; Kasal, Mangaon and Pandur in Kudal; Amboli and Niravade in Sawantwadi; Redi, Tulas and Adeli in Vengurla; and Morgaon and Talkat in Dodamarg.
