Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Nanak Ram Bhurji died on Tuesday after falling from the seventh floor of the Darul Safa New MLA Residence in Lucknow. Police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The 55-year-old BJP leader, who had also served as the state general secretary of the party’s Backward Class Cell, sustained critical injuries after the fall near the rear side of the government residential complex, which falls under the Hazratganj police station area.
Police Investigating Cause of Incident
Authorities said it is still unclear whether Bhurji accidentally fell from the building or jumped. Investigators are examining all possible angles and have begun collecting evidence from the scene to establish the sequence of events.
Officials said the Estate Officer of the Darul Safa New MLA Residence immediately alerted the local police outpost after the incident. Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted Bhurji to Civil Hospital for emergency treatment.
Declared Dead at Hospital
Despite efforts by medical staff, doctors declared Bhurji dead upon his arrival at the hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
The incident has sent shockwaves through political circles in Uttar Pradesh, where Bhurji was known as a senior BJP functionary and former minister.
Preliminary Inquiry Underway
During the initial investigation, police reportedly learned from people present at the residential complex that Bhurji had been battling depression for some time. Officials, however, stressed that these claims are part of the preliminary inquiry and are being independently verified.
Police have informed his family members about the incident, while the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Legal Formalities in Progress
An inquest has been initiated, and investigators are examining CCTV footage, witness statements and other available evidence to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal fall.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing and further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
