Mumbai’s relentless monsoon turned tragic on Sunday night after a portion of a residential building collapsed in the Mankhurd area, leaving six people dead and several others trapped under the debris. The incident occurred as heavy rainfall continued to batter the city, which remains under a Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Emergency teams launched a large-scale rescue operation immediately after the collapse, working through the night to search for survivors.
Section Of Residential Chawl Collapses
The accident took place around 8.30 pm at Chawl No. 5 in Janta Nagar, situated behind Hanuman Mandir in Mankhurd. Officials said a section of the ground-plus-three-storey residential structure suddenly gave way, causing multiple tenements to collapse.
Several residents were trapped beneath the rubble, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the 108 ambulance service rushed to the site and began rescue and evacuation efforts.
Heavy Rain Continues To Batter Mumbai
The building collapse came amid relentless rainfall that has disrupted normal life across Mumbai over the past 24 hours. Several parts of the city recorded extremely heavy rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding, traffic congestion and emergency incidents.
The IMD has continued its Red Alert for Mumbai, warning of more intense showers in the coming hours.
Tree Fall Incidents Add To Rain-Related Casualties
Apart from the building collapse, multiple tree fall incidents were reported from different parts of the city.
In Kurla, a 63-year-old man lost his life after a tree crashed onto a shop during the downpour. The incident marked another rain-related fatality caused by falling trees within a week.
In Bandra East, a large tree fell on a moving car near the Civic Health Centre Hospital. The driver sustained minor injuries and escaped safely. Civic workers and police officials later cleared the obstruction and restored traffic.
Another tree collapsed near the BDD Chawl area in Worli, leaving three people with minor injuries before emergency teams removed the fallen tree from the road.
Waterlogging And Traffic Chaos Across The City
Continuous rainfall also caused severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas, slowing vehicular movement across major roads and creating long traffic queues.
Emergency response teams remained busy attending complaints related to flooded roads, fallen trees and weather-related emergencies throughout the city.
Authorities Urge Residents To Remain Alert
Weather officials have warned that Mumbai may continue to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next several hours. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from weakened structures and report emergencies immediately.
With rescue operations still underway in Mankhurd and more rain forecast, civic agencies remain on high alert as they monitor the evolving weather situation and respond to incidents across the city.
