Mumbai witnessed yet another day of monsoon disruption on Friday as relentless overnight rain flooded several parts of the city, affecting road traffic, slowing suburban train services and leaving commuters struggling during the morning rush hour. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintaining an Orange Alert, authorities have warned that more heavy showers are likely through the day.
Large stretches of Sion, Dadar, Hindmata, Parel, Charkop, Worli, Goregaon and Andheri were submerged after continuous rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic congestion. Vehicles moved at a slow pace on several major roads while office-goers waded through flooded streets to reach workplaces.
Strong winds accompanied the heavy rain, with rough sea conditions witnessed along Marine Drive during the early morning hours. Similar scenes were reported from Lower Parel and Worli, where rainwater accumulated on roads, disrupting normal traffic movement.
Mumbai’s suburban railway network continued to function despite the adverse weather, though commuters experienced delays during peak hours. Central Railway services were running up to 15 minutes behind schedule, while trains on the Western and Harbour lines were delayed by around 10 minutes, resulting in overcrowding at several stations.
According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), several rain gauges recorded exceptionally high rainfall over the past 24 hours. Mandvi Fire Station received the highest rainfall at 150.2 mm, followed by Malabar Hill with 145.8 mm. Other parts of South Mumbai, including B Ward Office and Memonwada Fire Station, also recorded rainfall exceeding 140 mm.
The western suburbs continued to receive intense showers, with Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri recording 136.6 mm rainfall, while K East Ward Office registered 134.6 mm. Heavy rain was also recorded at Versova, Andheri Fire Station and several nearby locations.
In the eastern suburbs, Powai’s Paspoli Municipal School recorded 124 mm rainfall, while Mankhurd, Bhandup and Gawanpada also witnessed significant downpours, highlighting the widespread impact of the active monsoon system across Mumbai.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs throughout Friday, with isolated locations likely to receive extremely heavy showers. Gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph are also expected in some areas.
Civic authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged roads and follow weather advisories as the intense spell of rain is expected to continue over the next several hours. Emergency teams remain on alert to respond to any rain-related incidents across the city.
