TMC Split Row: Speaker to Hear Both Camps Before Taking Call on Rebel MPs

A dramatic power struggle inside the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has escalated, with the fate of a rebel faction now resting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The Speaker has reportedly initiated consultations with all sides before deciding on a request by dissident MPs seeking formal recognition of their group.

The move comes amid an intensifying battle within the party founded by Mamata Banerjee, as competing factions stake claim to political legitimacy and influence.

Speaker Seeks Views From Both Camps

According to sources, the Speaker’s office has asked MPs aligned with Mamata Banerjee’s camp to present their position before any decision is taken. The exercise is being seen as part of a broader effort to hear all stakeholders before ruling on the rebels’ demand.

A group of more than 20 MPs had earlier approached the Speaker, seeking official recognition and proposing a merger with the Nationalist Congress Party. Parliamentary sources indicate that legal consultations may also be sought before a final determination is made.

A decision is expected ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Rebellion Spreads Across Party Ranks

The crisis is no longer confined to Parliament. Political turbulence has spread to multiple levels of the party structure, raising questions about the future shape of the TMC.

In the West Bengal Assembly, a rival bloc led by Ritabrata Banerjee has reportedly secured the backing of dozens of legislators, significantly strengthening its position within the state legislature.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha faction led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has continued pressing for recognition, arguing that it represents a substantial section of the party’s parliamentary strength.

Abhishek Banerjee Opposes Recognition Bid

Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has reportedly urged the Speaker not to recognise the dissident camp, underscoring the growing divide between the party’s leadership and the rebel MPs.

The split became even more politically significant after members of the breakaway faction signalled support for the BJP-led NDA, a move that could alter parliamentary equations and reshape opposition politics.

Battle Could Extend Beyond Parliament

The conflict may not end with the Speaker’s ruling. Leaders from the rebel camp have indicated that issues relating to the party’s organisational control, election symbol and political assets could eventually become the subject of a larger legal battle.
