DK Shivakumar Signals Caution on Multiple Deputy CMs as Congress Finalises Karnataka’s New Power Structure

Incoming Karnataka Chief Minister reportedly prefers a leaner leadership model amid concerns over balancing senior leaders and cabinet aspirations.

Karnataka’s political transition has entered a crucial phase, with Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar reportedly expressing reservations over the proposal to appoint multiple Deputy Chief Ministers in the new Congress government. Sources indicate that Shivakumar has conveyed his concerns to party leaders as discussions intensify over the composition of the next cabinet.

The Congress leadership is currently working to finalise the structure of the new administration following the departure of outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, with Shivakumar widely expected to take charge in the coming days.

Shivakumar Seeks Balanced Power Equation

According to party insiders, Shivakumar believes that creating several Deputy Chief Minister positions could trigger fresh competition within the Congress ranks. With numerous senior leaders aspiring for key responsibilities, he is said to favour a formula that avoids internal dissatisfaction and ensures broader representation.

The issue is expected to be discussed with the Congress high command before the final cabinet blueprint is approved.

Congress Legislature Party Meeting Holds Key Importance

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is scheduled to meet to formalise leadership decisions and chart the roadmap for government formation. The meeting is expected to play a decisive role in determining the timing of Shivakumar’s swearing-in ceremony and the initial structure of the cabinet.

Sources suggest the oath-taking ceremony could take place within the next few days, while consultations with central party leaders continue.

Limited First Cabinet Likely

Party sources indicate that the first round of appointments may be kept small, with only a select group of ministers taking oath alongside Shivakumar. A broader cabinet expansion is expected later after discussions on regional, caste and political representation are completed.

The Congress leadership is reportedly keen to avoid rushing appointments and wants to strike a balance between experienced leaders and emerging faces.

Several Senior Leaders in Contention

A number of prominent Congress leaders are being discussed for cabinet roles as the party prepares for a new administration. The final list is expected to emerge only after consultations between Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah and the central leadership.

Apart from ministerial appointments, discussions are also underway regarding key legislative and organisational positions in the state.

Focus Shifts to Cabinet Formation

With the leadership transition nearing completion, attention has now shifted to cabinet formation and power-sharing arrangements. The Congress faces the challenge of accommodating competing interests while ensuring stability and unity in the government.
