TMC Gears Up for Major Demonstration in Kolkata
Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to spearhead a large-scale sit-in protest in Kolkata on June 2, with the party alleging widespread attacks on its workers and offices following the recent Assembly election results.
The proposed demonstration is expected to take place at Rani Rashmoni Road, subject to approval from the city police. Senior TMC leaders said the protest aims to highlight incidents of violence and intimidation allegedly faced by party supporters after the change in the state’s political landscape.
TMC Alleges Attacks After Election Defeat
The protest comes weeks after the Assembly elections delivered a major political upset, bringing an end to TMC’s long spell in power. Since the results were announced, the party claims that hundreds of its workers have come under pressure in different districts.
According to TMC leaders, several party offices were allegedly damaged, occupied or demolished in the aftermath of the polls. The party has also raised concerns over the safety of its grassroots workers and demanded stronger protection measures.
Party insiders say the June 2 protest will serve as a show of strength and solidarity with workers who they claim have been affected by post-election unrest.
BJP Rejects Charges, Calls It Political Drama
The BJP has strongly denied the allegations and accused the TMC of attempting to create a political narrative after losing power. BJP leaders argued that political violence has historically been an issue in West Bengal and claimed the ruling dispensation of previous years also faced similar accusations.
The exchange has further intensified the political battle between the state’s two biggest rivals, with both sides blaming each other for the disturbances reported after the election.
All Eyes on June 2
With police clearance still awaited, political observers are closely watching the planned protest, which could emerge as TMC’s first major statewide mobilisation since the election setback.
The demonstration is expected to draw senior party leaders, workers and supporters from across West Bengal as Mamata Banerjee seeks to bring national attention to the party’s allegations of post-poll violence.
