SP Draws Hard Line Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Poll Battle
With political preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections gathering momentum, the Samajwadi Party has reportedly made “winnability” the defining factor in alliance negotiations, placing fresh pressure on its INDIA bloc partners — especially the Indian National Congress.
Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is understood to have instructed alliance partners to submit detailed reports on prospective candidates, including caste equations, organisational strength and local voter influence, before any seat-sharing arrangement is finalised.
The move is being seen as a clear signal that the Samajwadi Party wants complete control over opposition strategy in Uttar Pradesh as it prepares for a direct electoral battle against the BJP.
Congress Seat Demand Faces Resistance
According to political sources, the Congress is believed to be seeking a significantly larger share of seats in the 402-member Assembly, citing its national stature and role within the INDIA alliance framework.
However, SP leaders reportedly remain unconvinced about the Congress party’s electoral strength across large sections of Uttar Pradesh.
Internal discussions within the Samajwadi Party suggest the Congress may ultimately receive far fewer seats than it expects, with SP leaders arguing that alliance decisions should be based on electoral performance rather than symbolic accommodation.
Akhilesh Pushes ‘Performance-Based Alliance’ Model
Leaders within the Samajwadi Party believe past alliance experiments weakened opposition efforts because seats were distributed on political compulsions instead of local ground realities.
This time, the party leadership wants every alliance partner to prove its electoral viability before claiming constituencies.
Political analyst Ramesh Chandra Dixit said the SP’s assertive posture reflects growing confidence within the party after recent electoral performances and Akhilesh Yadav’s attempt to position himself as the undisputed face of opposition politics in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Dixit, the Congress may struggle to justify large seat demands because its organisational presence remains weak in several districts.
BSP Factor Adds New Political Tension
The evolving negotiations have also been complicated by reports suggesting that some Congress leaders explored possible communication channels with the Bahujan Samaj Party led by Mayawati.
SP insiders reportedly view such developments cautiously and want the INDIA alliance structure in Uttar Pradesh to function strictly under Samajwadi Party leadership.
Party strategists fear that weak candidates or poorly negotiated alliances could ultimately divide anti-BJP votes and strengthen the ruling party’s position in the state.
Akhilesh Signals SP Will Lead Opposition Strategy
Akhilesh Yadav has already publicly asserted that the Samajwadi Party will take the lead role in determining seat-sharing arrangements in Uttar Pradesh.
