Congress Leadership Meetings Trigger Karnataka Political Storm
The Congress high command is once again facing intense speculation over a possible change in leadership in Karnataka, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar arriving in Delhi for crucial discussions with senior party leaders.
Although party insiders officially described the meetings as “routine,” political circles in Bengaluru are buzzing with reports that the Congress leadership may be exploring a major power transition formula in the state.
The latest round of speculation comes nearly three years after Congress returned to power in Karnataka with a decisive mandate, following months of internal discussions over rotational leadership and competing ambitions within the party.
‘Transfer Formula’ Under Discussion
According to leaders familiar with internal deliberations, the Congress leadership is believed to be evaluating multiple political options if Siddaramaiah eventually steps aside from the chief minister’s post.
Among the possibilities reportedly being discussed are:
- A Rajya Sabha role for Siddaramaiah
- A larger political role for his son Yathindra Siddaramaiah
- A reshuffle within the Karnataka cabinet structure
The evolving discussions have drawn comparisons with recent political developments in Bihar, where leadership changes reshaped the ruling alliance structure.
DK Shivakumar’s Silence Fuels Speculation
Despite growing media attention, DK Shivakumar avoided directly responding to questions about whether he could become Karnataka’s next chief minister.
When approached by reporters in Delhi, Shivakumar declined to comment but smiled before leaving the venue — a reaction that further intensified speculation surrounding his future role.
Several Congress legislators have previously voiced support for Shivakumar to eventually lead the state government, especially after his role in the party’s 2023 election victory.
Alternative Leadership Names Surface
Interestingly, political discussions within Congress are reportedly not limited to a direct Siddaramaiah-to-Shivakumar transition.
Sources indicate that if internal differences emerge over succession, senior Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge could also be considered as a consensus candidate in an alternative political arrangement, though leaders describe that possibility as unlikely at present.
Such a move could potentially open the door for organisational restructuring within the Congress at the national level, including changes involving Rahul Gandhi and senior leader KC Venugopal.
Siddaramaiah Camp Watching 2028 Political Calculations
Political observers also suggest that some supporters of Siddaramaiah may not be entirely opposed to Shivakumar taking charge immediately, believing that anti-incumbency challenges by the 2028 Assembly elections could politically weaken future rivals inside the party.
The Congress leadership, however, has so far avoided publicly acknowledging any formal discussion regarding a leadership transition in Karnataka.
