‘It Is Very Sad’: Devendra Fadnavis Speaks After 8 Killed in Ambenali Ghat Horror Crash

Eight people were killed after an SUV plunged into a deep gorge at Maharashtra’s dangerous Ambenali Ghat stretch in Raigad district, prompting a massive rescue operation involving police teams, disaster response personnel and local volunteers.

Confirming the tragedy, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said authorities rushed into action immediately after the accident was reported.

“It is very sad that eight people died in an unfortunate accident at Ambenali Ghat in Raigad district,” Fadnavis said while addressing the media.

SUV Fell Into Gorge on Mountain Route

According to officials, the victims were travelling in an SUV through the Ambenali Ghat section connecting Poladpur and Mahabaleshwar when the vehicle reportedly lost control on a sharp curve and plunged into a deep valley.

The accident is believed to have occurred late at night on the steep mountain road, which is known for dangerous turns, narrow stretches and poor visibility during difficult weather conditions.

Police sources said the vehicle fell hundreds of feet into the gorge, making rescue efforts extremely challenging.

Rescue Teams and NDRF Deployed

The Chief Minister said the district administration immediately launched relief operations and formed multiple rescue teams to search the valley.

“The district administration has immediately started relief and rescue operations and has formed five teams of seven people each,” Fadnavis stated.

He added that teams from the National Disaster Response Force were also assisting local authorities and volunteers at the accident site.

“The work of rescuing the bodies has been undertaken, and so far, three bodies have been recovered. The help of NDRF is also being taken in this. Other volunteer rescue teams are also helping,” he said.

Victims Belonged to Satara and Ratnagiri

Fadnavis said one of the deceased was from Ratnagiri district, while the remaining seven victims belonged to Satara district. Authorities from both districts are coordinating the operation.

“Raigad and Satara police forces are also coordinating,” the Chief Minister added.

Officials suspect the group was returning from a trip when the accident took place. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Ambenali Ghat Among Maharashtra’s Most Dangerous Roads

The Ambenali Ghat route in the Sahyadri hills has witnessed multiple serious accidents over the years due to steep slopes and risky curves. During monsoon and night travel, visibility and road grip often become major concerns for drivers.

Rescue operations continued for several hours as teams attempted to recover bodies from the deep gorge.
