The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Monday accused the government of avoiding a discussion in Parliament on the ongoing crisis in West Asia, saying the issue has serious economic and geopolitical implications for India.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, the Congress leader said the government was reluctant to allow a debate because it could expose the impact of international developments on India’s foreign policy and economy.
The remarks came as the Lok Sabha witnessed disruptions and was later adjourned amid protests by opposition parties demanding a detailed discussion on the conflict in the region.
Why Is the Opposition Demanding a Debate on the West Asia Crisis?
Rahul Gandhi argued that the situation in West Asia is not merely a foreign policy issue but one that could significantly affect India’s economy and citizens.
He warned that rising geopolitical tensions in the region could lead to higher global crude oil prices, which may directly impact fuel prices and economic stability in India.
According to the Congress MP from Rae Bareli, Parliament should prioritise discussion on issues that have a direct impact on the public.
“Fuel prices and the economic impact are public issues. These matters should be discussed in Parliament,” he said, questioning why the government was unwilling to allow a debate.
Rahul Gandhi Alleges Government Avoiding Debate
The opposition leader also alleged that the government was hesitant to allow a discussion because it could reveal uncomfortable details about the country’s diplomatic positioning.
He claimed that a full debate in both Houses of Parliament could expose how international developments are influencing India’s policy decisions.
Gandhi further alleged that the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, would find it difficult to face Parliament if the issue were debated in detail.
Why Were Lok Sabha Proceedings Adjourned?
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned on Monday amid loud protests by opposition members who demanded that the government allow a comprehensive discussion on the West Asia conflict.
The Lower House is scheduled to meet again on March 10 at 11:00 AM.
The confrontation marked the beginning of the second phase of the Budget Session with intense exchanges between the ruling alliance and opposition parties.
Opposition Protest Outside Parliament
Earlier in the day, Members of Parliament belonging to the INDIA bloc staged protests near the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament, raising slogans against the government and demanding a debate on the West Asia situation.
Senior opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, were among those participating in the protest.
What Did the Government Say About the West Asia Situation?
Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha and made a statement on the evolving situation in West Asia.
Jaishankar said the government had issued advisories for Indian nationals living in Iran and stressed that the safety of Indian citizens remains the government’s top priority.
He also stated that the Prime Minister continues to monitor developments closely and that various ministries are coordinating to respond to the situation effectively.
Why May Parliament Not Hold a Detailed Debate on the Issue?
According to parliamentary sources, a detailed debate on the West Asia crisis may not take place because rules do not mandate a discussion if a minister has already made a suo motu statement on an urgent matter in the House.
However, opposition parties have continued to insist that the issue deserves a full debate because of its potential impact on India’s economy, foreign policy, and energy security.
What Impact Could the West Asia Conflict Have on India?
Experts say developments in West Asia can have far-reaching consequences for India, particularly in areas such as oil imports, trade routes, and financial markets.
Rising tensions in the region often lead to higher crude oil prices globally, which can increase fuel costs and inflation in oil-importing countries like India.
