Members of the women’s wing of All India Trinamool Congress staged a protest rally on Sunday against the recent increase in cooking gas prices. The demonstration saw several women leaders and supporters dressed in black as they marched through parts of Kolkata to highlight their anger over the rising cost of LPG cylinders.

The protest was organised to draw attention to the burden that higher fuel prices are placing on households, particularly on women who manage daily cooking and family expenses.

The latest LPG price hike, announced recently, increased the cost of a domestic cylinder by around Rs 60 in several cities, pushing prices close to Rs 1,000 in many regions.

Protesters Bang Utensils, Use Traditional Chullah

During the demonstration, protesters used symbolic actions to express their dissatisfaction. Many participants banged steel utensils while marching on the streets, creating loud sounds to attract public attention to the issue.

Some protesters also used traditional clay stoves, commonly known as “chullah,” to demonstrate how households might be forced to return to older cooking methods if LPG prices continue to rise.

Why did protesters use utensils and chullah during the LPG protest?

Protesters used these symbolic methods to show that rising LPG prices could push households back to traditional cooking systems. By banging utensils and lighting clay stoves, they tried to highlight the financial strain the price hike could cause for families.

The protest also came amid growing global concerns about fuel prices following unrest in West Asia, which has affected energy markets.

Minister Shashi Panja Raises Concern for Households

Speaking during the protest, Shashi Panja, a minister and MLA from the ruling party, said the price increase would directly affect millions of households.

She stated, “Kitchens are mostly managed by women. The women will find it extremely difficult to manage the household if the LPG price rises like this. Rs 60 per cylinder increased pushing the price to nearly Rs 1000.”

What did Shashi Panja say about the impact of LPG price rise?

Panja said the increase in LPG prices would make it difficult for women to manage household kitchens, as many families are already struggling with rising costs of daily necessities.

Mamata Banerjee Attacks BJP Over Price Rise

On Saturday, Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party over the increase in LPG prices.

The West Bengal Chief Minister accused the BJP government of placing an unfair burden on ordinary citizens by allowing cooking gas prices to rise sharply.

Banerjee said the price hike would affect millions of middle-class and lower-income families who rely on LPG cylinders for daily cooking.

Why has the LPG price hike triggered a political debate?

The LPG price increase has sparked political debate across the country, with opposition parties accusing the central government of failing to control rising prices of essential commodities. Leaders say the increase could significantly affect household budgets and become a key political issue in the coming months.
