Amit Shah announced on Saturday that around 200 refugees from Pakistan and Afghanistan have been granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Shah said the decision reflects the government’s commitment to providing protection and dignity to persecuted minorities who migrated to India from neighbouring countries.
He made the remarks while addressing the programme “Jan-Jan Ki Sarkar: Char Saal Bemisaal” in Uttarakhand.
200 Refugees Granted Citizenship
According to Shah, the beneficiaries include individuals who had fled religious persecution in Pakistan and Afghanistan and later settled in India.
The Home Minister emphasised that such refugees deserve equal rights in India.
He said persecuted Hindus from these countries have the same right to live in India as any other citizen, including Narendra Modi.
“Hindu refugees who have come here from Afghanistan and Pakistan have the same right to this country as Prime Minister Modi,” Shah said during his speech.
Shah Attacks Opposition Parties
Shah also criticised several opposition parties for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act when it was introduced.
He specifically named the Indian National Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, All India Trinamool Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
The Home Minister accused these parties of opposing the law for political reasons and ignoring the plight of refugees who had suffered persecution in their home countries.
Taking a direct swipe at Rahul Gandhi, Shah said the government would continue granting citizenship to eligible refugees despite protests.
“No matter how much you oppose it, we will grant citizenship to such people,” he said.
Government Push for New Criminal Laws
Apart from the CAA issue, Shah also spoke about legal reforms being implemented across the country.
He said the government is replacing several colonial-era laws with modern legislation, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
According to Shah, these reforms are aimed at modernising India’s criminal justice system and aligning it with Indian values and priorities.
The Home Minister said the government plans to ensure complete nationwide implementation of the new legal framework by 2028.
He added that the reforms are part of a broader effort to move away from outdated laws inherited from the British colonial period and create a justice system suited to independent India.
