In a key political development ahead of the biennial Rajya Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced four candidates from Maharashtra. The move comes as seven Rajya Sabha seats from the state are scheduled to fall vacant later this year.

The party has fielded a mix of senior leaders and fresh faces, signaling both experience and organisational strength in its strategy.

Ramdas Athawale Among Key Names

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale is among the prominent nominees. Athawale, a long-time ally of the BJP and leader of the Republican Party of India (A), brings parliamentary experience and a strong Dalit outreach to the contest.

The party has also nominated Vinod Tawde, BJP’s National General Secretary and a former Maharashtra minister. Tawde’s organisational role at the national level makes his nomination politically significant.

Former Nagpur mayor Maya Chintaman Ivnate has also been chosen, reflecting the party’s focus on regional representation. The fourth candidate is Ramrao Wadkute, a senior leader with grassroots influence in the state.

Seven Seats Falling Vacant in Maharashtra

The Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra are expected to be closely watched, with seven seats set to become vacant. Political observers believe the BJP may announce additional candidates soon to cover the remaining positions.

Given Maharashtra’s complex political landscape and alliance equations, the final distribution of seats will depend heavily on numbers in the state assembly.

BJP’s National Strategy for Upper House

Earlier, the BJP declared nine candidates for Rajya Sabha seats from other states. In Bihar, the party nominated National President Nitin Nabin and Shivesh Kumar. From Assam, Terash Gowalla and Jogen Mohan were named.

In Chhattisgarh, Laxmi Verma has been fielded, while Sanjay Bhatia is the candidate from Haryana. In Odisha, state BJP chief Manmohan Samal and Sujeet Kumar have been selected.

The announcements indicate a calculated national strategy by the BJP to strengthen its presence in the Upper House.
