Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day State visit to Israel on February 25, 2026, with discussions expected to centre on defence cooperation, advanced technology, and strategic coordination. The visit comes at a time when West Asia continues to face security tensions and shifting geopolitical alignments.

Although the Prime Minister will arrive in Tel Aviv, key diplomatic meetings will be held in Jerusalem, including detailed talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Geopolitical Context and Regional Balancing

The visit takes place amid ongoing regional tensions and evolving diplomatic frameworks in West Asia. Since the signing of the Abraham Accords, Israel has expanded relations with several Arab nations, reshaping regional diplomacy.

India has simultaneously strengthened ties with Israel while maintaining close relations with Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Analysts view Modi’s visit as part of New Delhi’s broader balancing strategy — deepening cooperation with Israel without disturbing its partnerships across the Arab world.

How This Visit Differs from 2017

India and Israel elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership during Modi’s historic 2017 visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Israel.

While the 2017 visit focused on expanding diplomatic engagement and cooperation in agriculture and water management, the 2026 visit is expected to emphasise high-technology collaboration, defence manufacturing, and technology transfer. Officials indicate that talks may include joint production in defence systems, cyber security infrastructure, and next-generation innovation platforms.

Diplomats describe this phase as a shift from symbolic diplomacy to deeper industrial and security integration.

Trade and Defence Cooperation

Bilateral trade between India and Israel has grown steadily over the years. Trade volumes, excluding defence, have crossed several billion dollars annually, with strong activity in diamonds, chemicals, electronics, and machinery.

Israel is also among India’s key defence suppliers, particularly in missile systems, surveillance equipment, drones, and radar technology. Both countries have expanded cooperation in homeland security and counter-terrorism intelligence sharing.

The upcoming talks are expected to review joint ventures and explore collaboration in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing, cyber defence systems, and advanced research partnerships.

Address to the Knesset

A key highlight of the visit will be Modi’s address to the Knesset. Such an address is considered a significant diplomatic gesture and reflects strong parliamentary-level engagement between the two democracies.

The speech is expected to outline India’s approach to innovation-driven growth, defence cooperation, and shared democratic values.

Tribute at Yad Vashem

The Prime Minister will also visit Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial. He is scheduled to pay tribute at the “Book of Names,” honouring Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

Such visits are seen as expressions of respect for historical memory and humanitarian values.

Meetings with Israeli Leadership

Apart from bilateral talks with Netanyahu, Modi is expected to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog at the President’s Residence to review bilateral cooperation and regional developments.

Israeli officials have described the visit as an opportunity to expand collaboration in defence innovation and emerging technologies. Observers in Jerusalem say the engagement signals continuity in political trust between the two governments.
