Lucknow: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi appeared before the MP/MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday in connection with a defamation case filed in 2018. After recording his statement, he left the court premises later in the day.

Statement Recorded Before MP/MLA Court

Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer Kashi Prasad said that his client recorded his statement before the court and strongly denied all allegations made against him. According to the lawyer, Rahul Gandhi told the court that the accusations were completely baseless.

Next Hearing Scheduled for March 9, 2026

The court has fixed March 9, 2026, as the next date of hearing in the case. The matter will continue to be heard by the MP/MLA court, which handles cases involving sitting and former lawmakers.

Case Linked to 2018 Defamation Complaint

The case relates to an alleged defamatory remark made by Rahul Gandhi in 2018 against Union Home Minister Amit Shah allegedly referred him as a “murder accused” while addressing a press conference, a statement linked to the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case and later cited as defamatory.. The complaint claims that the statement hurt the reputation of the senior BJP leader, leading to the filing of the defamation case.
