Pune: A stampede-like situation broke at Shivneri Fort last night, the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, as large crowds flocked for Shiv Jayanti celebrations. Devotees, youth groups carrying Shiv Jyoti ceremonial flames, and members of various organisations across Maharashtra thronged the fort well before the official festivities began.
Overcrowding Sparks Chaos
Heavy congestion developed around narrow pathways below the Amberkhana area, particularly near Hathi Darwaza and Ganesh Darwaza entrances. The dense crowd trying to move forward simultaneously triggered panic, resulting in a stampede-like scenario.
Officials reported that inadequate police deployment initially made crowd control difficult. Women and children were among those caught in the commotion.
Injuries and Medical Response
Six people sustained injuries in the chaos and were immediately transported to the Junnar government hospital. Authorities confirmed that all injured are currently receiving treatment, and thankfully, no fatalities were reported. Police later restored order and managed to calm the crowd.
Chief Minister to Attend Main Celebrations
Shiv Jayanti celebrations at Shivneri Fort are traditionally attended by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This year, the main program is scheduled to start at 9 am, and the Chief Minister is expected to grace the occasion.
Calls for Better Crowd Management
The incident has raised serious questions about administrative preparedness. Citizens and organisers are demanding better crowd management strategies, including structured entry and exit points, adequate police deployment, and emergency response plans, to prevent similar incidents in future Shiv Jayanti celebrations.
