Bhupen Borah resigns Assam Congress BJP join speculation

Delhi: Assam’s political landscape witnessed a dramatic turn after former state Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah formally announced his resignation from the Indian National Congress. The decision has intensified speculation about his next political move, with strong indications that he may soon align with the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Allegations of Internal Humiliation
Borah, who spent over three decades in the Congress, expressed deep dissatisfaction with the party’s internal functioning. He claimed that despite dedicating 32 years to the organization and holding key responsibilities, including leading the Assam unit, he repeatedly faced public embarrassment and a lack of support from senior leaders. According to Borah, his concerns were conveyed to Rahul Gandhi, but no corrective action followed.

He pointed to disagreements over alliance strategies and candidate selection during by-elections, suggesting that decisions were altered without consultation, undermining his authority as state president. Borah was referring to a recent Assam by-election where a seat initially intended for CPI(ML) was given to a non-Congress candidate, a move that led to the party’s defeat and intensified his dissatisfaction over alliance decisions.

Gogoi Dismisses Charges
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi rejected Borah’s claims, accusing him of crafting a narrative to justify a political switch. Gogoi remarked that leaders who join the BJP often criticize their former parties and questioned why Borah chose not to associate with other opposition forces if his ideological differences were genuine.

Party Leadership Reacts
Leader of Opposition in Assam, Debabrata Saikia, responded cautiously, stating that Borah was free to take his own political path. While refraining from direct criticism, Saikia’s remarks reflected the growing strain within the state Congress unit.

Impact on Assam Politics
Borah’s exit comes at a sensitive time, with the state gearing up for crucial electoral battles. His departure could reshape political equations, especially if he formally joins the BJP, led in Assam by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Observers believe the move may influence alliance strategies and voter perceptions in the months ahead.
