New Delhi: A fierce political confrontation erupted in Parliament on Wednesday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly rebuked Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his criticism of the India–US trade agreement, accusing him of lowering parliamentary standards and making “baseless and misleading” allegations.

Soon after Gandhi’s speech in the Lok Sabha, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi addressed a press briefing and launched a sharp attack on the Congress leader. Calling him the “wisest fool in Congressdom,” Trivedi alleged that Gandhi had reduced the dignity of parliamentary debate.

“Rahul Gandhi has brought parliamentary decorum to its lowest point,” Trivedi said. “Time and again, the Congress party levels absurd and false allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the government.”

During his address in the House, Gandhi had sharply criticized the India–US trade deal, claiming that the government had “sold Bharat Mata” and describing the agreement as a “wholesale surrender.” He further alleged that the deal was structured to “protect the BJP’s financial architecture, on which there is a case in the United States.”

The remarks triggered immediate pushback from the Treasury benches.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju announced that the government would move a privilege notice against the Congress MP, accusing him of misleading the House and making statements without substantiation.

“Rahul Gandhi deliberately does this repeatedly,” Rijiju said at a press conference. “After delivering a speech full of lies and allegations, he runs away and does not stay back to listen to the minister’s reply.”

Expressing strong disapproval, Rijiju added, “It is very unfortunate that the country does not have a Leader of Opposition with a serious nature and character befitting the position.”

He confirmed that the BJP would challenge Gandhi’s claims both politically and procedurally. “Our party will counter Rahul Gandhi’s lies outside the House, but inside Parliament, we will serve a notice to the Speaker,” Rijiju stated.

Rijiju further asserted that Gandhi had promised to authenticate his claims but questioned his ability to do so. “Rahul Gandhi has said he will authenticate his statements, but I know he cannot because he lied. He lied in the House,” he said. “After his speech, he left immediately, repeatedly breaking parliamentary norms.”
