The Supreme Court ruled that election disputes arising during the poll process must be addressed through election petitions.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the University Grants Commission (UGC) on two new petitions challenging the recently notified UGC regulations. The Court directed that these fresh petitions be tagged with earlier cases already under consideration.

The petitioners argue that the new regulations are discriminatory against the general category and violate fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had stayed the implementation of these UGC rules and had issued notices to the Centre and UGC. The Court had also suggested the formation of a committee to review the regulations afresh and ensure fairness in their application.
