New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday questioned the controversy surrounding the alleged circulation of former Army chief General MM Naravane’s unpublished memoir after the Delhi Police filed an FIR in the matter. Gandhi raised sharp questions over conflicting claims made by the publisher and the former Army chief himself.
Speaking to the media, Rahul Gandhi said there is clear confusion over whether the book has been published or not. Referring to a social media post by General Naravane, Gandhi said, “Here is a tweet from Mr Naravane which says, ‘Just follow the link to my book.’ The point I am making is—either Mr Naravane is lying or Penguin is lying. I don’t think the former Army chief will lie.”
Rahul Gandhi pointed out that Penguin Random House India has officially stated that the book has not been printed or released, yet the memoir appears to be available on online platforms. “Penguin says the book has not been published, but the book is available on Amazon. General Naravane has tweeted, ‘Please buy my book in 2023.’ I believe Naravane ji over Penguin,” he said.
Questioning the motive behind the controversy, Gandhi claimed that the issue arose because the memoir contains statements that are uncomfortable for the government. “I believe Naravane ji has made certain statements in his book which are inconvenient for the Government of India and the Prime Minister of India. Obviously, you have to decide if Penguin or the former Army chief is telling the truth,” he added.
The FIR was registered by Delhi Police to investigate the alleged illegal circulation of the book, which has also triggered disruptions in Parliament.
