Delhi: The Assam government has decided to escalate allegations involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi to the Union Home Ministry, saying the matter has national security implications and cannot be handled at the state level alone. The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting held on Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed.
Addressing the media after the meeting, CM Sarma said the state administration believes the issue demands scrutiny by central agencies. “This is not just a state matter. Given the nature of the allegations and the individuals involved, it requires examination at the national level,” he said.
According to the Chief Minister, the case involves three key individuals — a sitting Member of Parliament, his spouse who holds British citizenship, and a Pakistani national identified as Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sarma said an investigation team had earlier been formed by the Assam government to examine the alleged links and activities.
“An SIT was constituted to look into a suspected anti-India network involving a Pakistani citizen, a foreign national, and a public representative. Considering the seriousness, we have decided to forward all findings and materials to the Ministry of Home Affairs,” Sarma stated.
The move comes amid a sharp political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam. The controversy intensified earlier this week after Gaurav Gogoi, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, accused the Chief Minister’s family of illegally acquiring large areas of land across the state.
Gogoi had claimed that thousands of bighas of land in different districts were allegedly acquired through irregular means. The Chief Minister categorically rejected the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated, and announced plans to initiate legal action.
“Baseless allegations will be met with legal consequences,” Sarma said, adding that he would file a defamation case to protect his reputation.
Responding to the state government’s decision to involve the Centre, Gogoi alleged that the move was an attempt to shift public focus. He claimed that raising questions about his personal connections was meant to distract from land-related accusations against the Chief Minister’s family.
