Delhi: Political temperatures rose sharply in Parliament after BJP MP Anurag Thakur launched a strong attack on Opposition parties over repeated disruptions and disorderly conduct during House proceedings. Speaking amid continuing protests, Thakur said the Opposition had failed to respect the dignity of Parliament despite earlier calls for a fresh and more constructive beginning.

Referring to the shift to the new Parliament building, Thakur said there was a collective expectation that lawmakers would change their behaviour and uphold democratic traditions. Instead, he accused Opposition members of resorting to theatrics that undermine the institution itself.

“When we came to the new Parliament, we said that let’s make a fresh start. Stop entering the Well, stop showing black cards, stop bringing banners. There can be ways to protest, but it is not appropriate when you have already decided on something. You do that too, climbing on the table, throwing papers at the Speaker, throwing papers at the Chairman. A chairman, coming from a minority community, was insulted by having papers thrown at him and being called ‘yaar’…,” Thakur said.

The BJP leader stressed that protest is a democratic right, but it cannot come at the cost of parliamentary decorum. He argued that repeated disruptions, including storming the Well of the House and targeting presiding officers, damage India’s democratic image and weaken meaningful debate.

Thakur’s remarks come amid heightened tensions following the suspension of several Opposition MPs for alleged unruly conduct. The government has maintained that such action was necessary to protect the functioning of Parliament, while the Opposition has accused the ruling party of suppressing dissent.
