New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be delivering his much-anticipated reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address this Tuesday after repeated disruptions forced the Lok Sabha to adjourn proceedings till Thursday, bringing parliamentary business to a standstill.
The Budget Session witnessed sharp confrontations between the treasury benches and the Opposition, with protests escalating to the point where normal functioning of the House became impossible. As a result, the Prime Minister’s response to President Droupadi Murmu’s address has now been deferred.
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge launched a wide-ranging attack on the ruling establishment, raising issues such as the demand for a caste census, women’s representation, the performance of central welfare schemes, and the prolonged crisis in Manipur. Taking aim at the BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS, Kharge pointed out that neither organisation has ever been headed by a woman.
Referring to the violence in Manipur, Kharge drew a sharp historical comparison to underline his criticism of the Prime Minister’s delayed visit to the state. He said that while explorers like Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus crossed continents in months, the Prime Minister took nearly two years to reach Manipur despite the seriousness of the situation.
Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said he intended to present a copy of former Army chief General M.M. Naravane’s memoir to Prime Minister Modi, a remark that added to the charged atmosphere in the House.
