Wardha: Political tension escalated in parts of Wardha district after an alleged attempt was made to stop Congress corporators travelling from Chandrapur to Nagpur. The situation created panic for a brief period but was brought under control due to quick action by party workers and the police.
According to police officials, the incident occurred in the evening when newly elected members of the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation were on their way to Nagpur for official procedures related to party registration. As their bus neared a toll point in Wardha district, it was reportedly surrounded by several vehicles carrying unidentified men with covered faces.
The attackers allegedly tried to block the bus and force some corporators to step out. A complaint later filed by one of the corporators claimed that the group appeared to be attempting an abduction. Before the situation could worsen, Congress supporters reached the spot, leading to heated arguments and a brief scuffle.
Police from the nearby station arrived soon after receiving information and managed to disperse the crowd. One person was detained by party workers at the scene and later taken into police custody. Authorities confirmed that cases have been registered against six individuals, while efforts are ongoing to identify others involved.
The incident has added to the political unrest in Chandrapur, where the Congress party is facing internal disagreements over the upcoming mayoral election. Following the recent civic polls, multiple factions within the party are staking claim to the mayor’s post, intensifying the rivalry.
