Lucknow: A shocking and disturbing incident has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, where a young man allegedly went to extreme lengths to secure admission to an MBBS course. In a case that has stunned doctors, police, and the public alike, the youth is accused of cutting off his own toes and then making up a fake story of an attack to claim the benefit of the disability quota, as reported by leading daily.

The incident took place in the Line Bazaar area of Jaunpur. The accused has been identified as Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur village. According to police officials, Suraj reportedly chopped off four toes of his left foot, leaving only the big toe intact. After the act, he allegedly tried to mislead everyone by claiming that unknown attackers had assaulted him during the night.

Suraj lives with his mother, elder brother, and sister. His brother is employed, while Suraj holds a D-Pharma degree and was preparing hard to get admission into an MBBS course. Family members told police that Suraj was extremely focused on becoming a doctor and often spoke about how difficult it was to get a medical seat.

On the night of January 18, Suraj was alone at home as the house was under construction and other family members were away. The next morning, his severed toes were discovered, and he was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. He also reportedly informed his girlfriend about the incident before being admitted.

Initially, Suraj told the police that two unknown men attacked him around midnight, knocked him unconscious, and cut off his toes before fleeing. He even claimed that he had earlier received threats due to a minor neighbourhood dispute. Based on this statement, the police registered a case of attempted murder and began an investigation.

However, the story soon started falling apart. Investigators noticed several contradictions in Suraj’s version. A detailed examination of the crime scene revealed syringes, anaesthetic-related items, and a cutting machine inside the house. Call detail records and forensic clues further strengthened the suspicion that no outsider was involved.

The biggest twist came when police recovered a diary from Suraj’s room. In the diary, he had written about his determination to get an MBBS seat in 2026 “at any cost.” The investigation also revealed that he had earlier applied for a disability certificate at BHU in October 2025, but his request was rejected.
