A Kerala-based social media influencer has been taken into custody in connection with the suicide of a middle-aged man, days after a viral video accusing him of sexual harassment set off intense public scrutiny and debate across the state.
The woman, identified as Shimjitha Musthafa, was arrested on Wednesday from a relative’s residence in Vadakara following a sustained search operation by the police. Investigators had earlier issued a lookout circular amid concerns that she might attempt to leave the country as public pressure mounted and the case gained national attention.
Authorities said Musthafa would be produced before the Kunnamangalam court as part of the legal process. The arrest marks a significant turn in a case that has raised complex questions about social media accountability, public shaming, and due process.
The controversy began last week when Musthafa and 42-year-old sales manager U Deepak were co-passengers on a bus in Kozhikode district. Musthafa recorded a video during or after the journey, alleging that Deepak had behaved inappropriately with her. The clip was uploaded to her social media account and rapidly went viral, drawing millions of views and triggering widespread reactions online.
Within two days of the video’s circulation, Deepak was found dead at his residence. His parents later told police that their son was devastated by the public backlash and humiliation following the viral post. According to the family, Deepak had withdrawn completely, refusing food and remaining distressed in the days leading up to his death.
As the case unfolded, Musthafa removed the original video from her account and later posted another clip explaining her side of the incident. That video, too, was eventually taken down or made private, further intensifying speculation and debate on social media.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation in Kerala about the power of digital platforms, the consequences of viral accusations, and the need for careful investigation before individuals are publicly named or judged.
