Mumbai: Just hours before Maharashtra votes for key municipal corporations, a fresh political flashpoint has erupted with the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) announcing the deployment of party workers outside polling stations. Branded as “Bhagwa Guards,” these volunteers will keep watch on voter movement throughout polling day, a move that has already stirred controversy.
According to instructions circulated within both parties, the Bhagwa Guards have been tasked with spotting voters whose names allegedly appear more than once on electoral rolls or those suspected of attempting fraudulent voting. Party leaders insist the initiative is meant to “protect democracy” and ensure that polling remains transparent and fair.
However, the announcement took a sharper turn after MNS chief Raj Thackeray issued a hardline message to his cadre. He reportedly told party workers to immediately confront anyone caught engaging in bogus voting or using duplicate voter entries, using the phrase “धुलाई करो”—a remark that has drawn criticism for its aggressive undertone and raised fears of confrontation near polling booths.
With tensions rising, the Election Commission has moved swiftly to prevent any disruption. Senior officials have directed district administrations and police forces to step up security outside polling centres, making it clear that law and order will not be compromised under any circumstances. Authorities have warned that any attempt to intimidate voters or interfere with the polling process will invite strict action.
