Mumbai: In a fiery exchange with his cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, MNS chief Raj Thackeray launched a blistering attack on the BJP, accusing the ruling party of harboring ambitions to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra. The interview, published in Shiv Sena (UBT)’s mouthpiece Saamana on Thursday, highlighted the Thackeray cousins’ shared focus on safeguarding the interests of the “Marathi manoos” in the state.

The two leaders, interviewed by Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut and filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar, discussed their recent alliance ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15. Raj Thackeray emphasized that the partnership is aimed not at political survival but at protecting the local Marathi population.

Raj expressed concern over the growing influence of outsiders in Maharashtra, stating, “People from outside are not just coming here for jobs; they are creating constituencies of their own. The threat of Mumbai being separated from Maharashtra is real, reminiscent of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement era.” He warned that if the BJP gains control over municipal corporations, the Marathi community will have no real say in governance.

Focusing on civic administration, Raj stressed the importance of controlling local bodies in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, Mira-Bhayander, Kalyan-Dombivali, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to protect Marathi interests.

Uddhav Thackeray, meanwhile, criticized the state government for what he called “unplanned development,” arguing that many initiatives touted as progress are actually detrimental. He accused ruling officials of prioritizing contractor interests over the welfare of Mumbai’s citizens, despite being local Maharashtrians themselves.

Both leaders also highlighted the escalating drug problem in Maharashtra. Raj Thackeray called for stricter enforcement, linking political funding and narcotics distribution, while pointing out that drug raids have dwindled and control over peddling is practically nonexistent.
