Delhi: Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Tuesday strongly criticized Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after reports surfaced of anti-India slogans being raised on campus. Speaking to the media, Shekhawat described the incident as “unfortunate, but not new,” highlighting a history of controversial student activism at the university.
He said, “It is unfortunate, but not new. It is a university where anti‑India slogans were raised in the past, and Kasab’s death penalty was opposed. People are aware of their mindset. What is more unfortunate is that they receive support from a specific party whose government is currently in Karnataka.”
Shekhawat’s remarks point to growing concern among government leaders about politically motivated student activism at educational institutions. According to him, such incidents not only question the patriotic sentiment of certain student groups but also reveal the backing they receive from political quarters, raising broader debates about accountability and influence on campuses.
