Mumbai: Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s dominant performance in the recent Maharashtra local body elections, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for discipline and restraint among party leaders, emphasizing the importance of preserving harmony within the Mahayuti alliance.
At a late-night meeting with the BJP core committee at his official residence, Fadnavis reviewed the election results, highlighting both the party’s victories and areas of concern. Despite emerging as the largest party in civic polls, the Chief Minister pointed out setbacks in several municipal councils and nagar panchayats, including constituencies represented by BJP legislators, stressing the need to strengthen performance at the grassroots level.
Fadnavis reportedly advised against public criticism of allies such as Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP. Leaders were told to maintain discipline, even if seat-sharing arrangements for upcoming civic elections do not go as planned.
The Mahayuti alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, achieved sweeping victories in 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the state, securing 207 president posts. The BJP alone won 117, while Shinde’s Shiv Sena claimed 53, and NCP secured 37 posts. In contrast, the opposition alliance of Congress, Shiv Sena UBT, and NCP SP managed only 44 president posts, with Congress emerging as the top performer among opposition parties with 28 posts.
The results also marked a significant milestone for the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which contested against the BJP in multiple seats for the first time since the party split. The Sena expanded its influence beyond traditional strongholds in the Konkan and Thane regions, making notable gains in rural and semi-urban areas. Shinde hailed the performance, asserting that critics who doubted the party’s reach had been proven wrong.
Fadnavis described the election outcome as a “trailer” for the upcoming municipal corporation elections, including the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls scheduled for January 15.
