Mumbai: Polling for key positions in Maharashtra’s local self-governance bodies began smoothly on Saturday morning, marking an important phase in the state’s civic democratic process. Voters are casting their ballots to elect presidents and members in 23 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, along with filling 143 vacant member posts across various urban local bodies.

According to officials from the State Election Commission, voting commenced at 7:30 am and will continue uninterrupted until 5:30 pm. Adequate arrangements have been made at polling stations to ensure a peaceful and transparent voting process, with election officials monitoring turnout throughout the day.

This round of polling follows the first phase, during which elections were held for 263 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. In several of those bodies, presidents and members were elected unopposed, reflecting consensus in some regions and reducing the need for competitive polling.

The political contest, however, remains intense in many areas. In a unique development, partners of the ruling Mahayuti alliance — including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) — are facing each other in certain local contests. These “friendly fights” have added an extra layer of interest to the elections.

At the same time, the broader battle is between the BJP-led Mahayuti and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), making the civic polls a test of grassroots strength ahead of future political challenges. Political observers see these elections as a crucial indicator of public sentiment at the local level.

The State Election Commission has announced that counting of votes for all municipal councils and nagar panchayats — including those that went to polls earlier on December 2 — will be conducted on December 21. Counting at all designated centres will begin at 10 am, with results expected to provide a clearer picture of the political balance in Maharashtra’s urban local bodies.
