Mumbai: In an unusually brief schedule, the Maharashtra government is set to convene the winter session of the State Legislature in Nagpur from December 8 to December 14, compressing crucial legislative business into just seven days. Despite the weekend falling on December 13 and 14, both houses will continue to function—an uncommon move that signals political urgency ahead of major local body elections.

According to officials, the session was initially expected to run until December 19. However, with the State Election Commission preparing to declare polls for municipal corporations and zilla parishads immediately after the ongoing Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayat elections, the government opted for a shorter session. The timeline aligns with the Supreme Court’s directive to complete all pending local body elections by January 2026.

Tight Security and Intensive Preparations

The administrative machinery in Nagpur is working round the clock to complete preparations. Security teams from Mumbai have taken over the legislature complex, and arrangements are being finalized at key residences, including:

  • Chief Minister’s residence
  • Residences of both Deputy Chief Ministers
  • Ministers’ quarters at Ravi Bhavan
  • State ministers’ quarters at Nag Bhavan
  • MLA residential complexes

Officials note that logistical planning has been expedited to handle the unusually continuous session, especially over the weekend.

Vidarbha’s Long History With the Winter Session

Since the state’s formation in 1960 and the signing of the Nagpur Pact, the winter session has held symbolic and political importance for Vidarbha, often spotlighting regional development issues. Traditionally, the session lasted a minimum of six weeks, but durations have varied over the decades.

Historical records show:

  • 27-day session in one early year
  • 28-day session in 1968
  • 17 days in 1975
  • Six-week sessions again in 1984, 1992, and 2019
  • A special winter session in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic

This year’s compressed timeline has sparked discussions over whether such a short sitting can address longstanding concerns of the region.

What to Expect This Session

The government is likely to face questions from the opposition on inflation, farmer distress, industrial slowdown, and delays in local body elections. The ruling Mahayuti bloc is also expected to push through pending bills before the model code of conduct kicks in for municipal polls.
