Delhi: As Delhi’s air turned dangerously toxic on Tuesday, the central government imposed Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to tackle the worsening pollution across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) spiked from 362 (very poor) on Monday to 425 (severe) on Tuesday morning — a level considered hazardous to health. The sharp decline in air quality has been attributed to calm winds, stagnant weather, and increased vehicular and industrial emissions, compounded by stubble burning in neighbouring states.

With GRAP Stage III coming into effect, sweeping curbs have been implemented to curb pollution. Non-essential construction, demolition, and mining activities have been halted across Delhi-NCR, while stone crushers and hot mix plants have been ordered to shut down immediately.

Tighter vehicular regulations are also in force. The use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles has been banned in Delhi and adjoining NCR districts, except for vehicles used for emergency services and those driven by persons with disabilities.

Schools have been advised to shift to online or hybrid classes for students up to Grade 5, to minimize children’s exposure to toxic air. Officials said these measures would remain until a steady improvement in air quality is observed.
