New Delhi: India has strongly reacted to the recent unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), attributing the turmoil to Pakistan’s oppressive policies and systematic exploitation of the region’s resources. The ongoing unrest has reportedly resulted in 12 deaths and over 150 injuries.

In its first official statement regarding the fresh disturbances, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the brutal actions of Pakistani forces against civilians in PoK and reiterated that the territory remains under Pakistan’s “forcible” and “illegal occupation.”

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a weekly press briefing, said, “We have seen reports on protests in several areas of Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir, including brutalities by Pakistani forces on innocent civilians. We believe that it is a natural consequence of Pakistan’s oppressive approach and systemic plundering of resources from these territories, which remain under its forcible and illegal occupation. Pakistan must be held accountable for its horrific human rights violations.”

The unrest was reportedly triggered by the Shehbaz Sharif government’s failure to address local demands, including the controversial abolition of 12 reserved legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan.

Protesters are also demanding urgent economic relief measures such as reduced electricity tariffs, subsidized wheat flour, and the removal of perks for government officials. Additionally, they seek free education and healthcare facilities for the people of PoK.
