Ladakh: Leh witnessed massive unrest on Wednesday as students staged a large-scale protest backing climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s demand for full statehood for Ladakh. The demonstrators also raised slogans against the central government, expressing frustration over the perceived inaction on the issue.

What started as a peaceful march soon turned chaotic, with clashes breaking out between protesters and police as well as paramilitary forces. During the unrest, a CRPF vehicle was set ablaze, prompting authorities to increase security deployment throughout Leh. The protesters, largely students, vocally demanded full statehood for the Union Territory.

Wangchuk, who has been on an extended hunger strike, has been pushing for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. His movement has resonated strongly with the youth, who accuse the central government of delaying concrete action.

Amid the clashes, demonstrators also set fire to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Leh. The agitation highlights ongoing tensions in the region, which has sought greater autonomy since the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, when Ladakh was carved out as a separate Union Territory comprising Leh and Kargil. Protesters insist that full statehood is essential for the region’s political, cultural, and economic development.
