Mumbai: Dadar turned into a high-security zone today as heavy police deployment surrounded the iconic kabutar khana, with the Jain temple’s doors locked since morning. Tensions escalated after the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti called for a massive protest demanding strict enforcement of the pigeon-feeding ban and stern action against Jain community members who recently defied orders by removing protective tarpaulin and feeding pigeons.
The agitation has gained political momentum, with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) openly extending support. Support is also pouring in from Marathi leaders across political lines, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders are expected to join. Protesters have begun gathering at the site since morning, but the main leaders are yet to arrive, while police remain on high alert to prevent any flare-up.
The showdown coincides with a crucial Bombay High Court hearing on the kabutar khana case, expected around noon. The court had previously directed the BMC to form an expert committee to study the health hazards caused by pigeon droppings, and the civic body is slated to present details of the committee’s formation today.
Adding to the brewing tension, petitioners Pallavi Patil and Shena Visaria have formally written to the BMC demanding the reopening of kabutar khanas, arguing that the High Court never ordered their closure and that the decision was solely the BMC’s. With political backing, legal proceedings, and public anger converging, Dadar has become the epicenter of a volatile confrontation that could escalate rapidly.
