Fadnavis: Vantara Assures Support for Madhuri’s Return, No Intent to Take Custody

Mumbai: In a significant development in the ongoing elephant custody matter, the Maharashtra Government held a detailed discussion with the Vantara team in Mumbai regarding the return of the temple elephant ‘Madhuri’ to the Math. The meeting brought a ray of hope for a peaceful resolution, as Vantara expressed full cooperation with the state government’s efforts.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis stated that the Vantara team made it clear they are willing to join the Maharashtra Government’s petition before the Hon’ble Supreme Court to ensure the smooth transfer of Madhuri back to her religious home. “They assured us that they are acting solely on the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and have no intention of permanently keeping custody of ‘Madhuri’”.

During the meeting, Vantara also proposed the establishment of a rehabilitation center for Madhuri in Kolhapur, near Nandani, at a site identified by the Maharashtra Forest Department. This move could serve as a temporary arrangement or a medical and care facility before her final return, depending on the court’s direction.

Importantly, the Vantara team emphasized that they hold the religious sentiments of the community in the highest regard and that their actions have never been aimed at hurting such beliefs.

The case of elephant Madhuri has drawn public attention due to its emotional, religious, and legal significance. Supporters of the Math have demanded the return of the elephant, claiming her presence is integral to their religious practices, while concerns over animal welfare and legal custody are being dealt with by courts.
