India–UK Free Trade Pact Marks a Bold Leap for Indian Exporters

Piyush Goyal felicitated in Mumbai; session highlights SME and sectoral benefits

Mumbai: “The India–UK Free Trade Agreement is not just a trade deal—it’s a bold, transformative leap towards our vision of a Developed India,” said Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Friday, as he was felicitated in Mumbai for spearheading the landmark trade agreement that opens access to the UK market under significantly reduced tariffs.

The felicitation event, held at Paradise Hall in Borivali West, featured a special session titled “Export Opportunities in the UK Market,” where business leaders and MSMEs gathered to better understand the possibilities the FTA has unlocked.

Organised under the leadership of Dahisar MLA Manisha Chaudhary, the program brought together exporters, MSMEs, startup founders, traders, and industrial association members from across Maharashtra. Hosting associations included the North Konkan Chamber of Commerce, GJEPC, SREPTC, Fisheries Associations, Tarapur Industrial Manufacturers’ Association, Laghu Udyog Bharati, and the Die Makers’ Association.

The interactive session featured detailed discussions on UK trade regulations, tax structures, export logistics, and quality compliance. Experts offered actionable guidance on leveraging the UK market, especially for SMEs, which stand to gain the most from this liberalised trade environment.

Highlighting the economic impact of the FTA, Minister Goyal added,

“With zero or minimal tariffs on Indian goods entering the UK, we will see a direct boost in exports, job creation, and economic momentum. This is a critical step in empowering Indian industry globally.”

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership for enabling the agreement, and stressed that trade partnerships under this government are aimed at reinforcing India’s economic sovereignty—unlike the flawed trade decisions of previous regimes.

“The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will further enhance India’s global standing. We are engaging with more nations and working with a clear 2030 vision,” Goyal said.

MLA Manisha Chaudhary underlined the grassroots implications of the agreement, particularly for local industries and fisheries communities.

“This agreement brings a wave of optimism. Fishermen and exporters are thrilled about better market access under fairer terms. It truly is a game changer for small and local enterprises,” she said.

The event concluded with a Q&A session for exporters, providing clarity on the processes, documentation, and government assistance available for tapping into the UK market. Several participants expressed appreciation for the Commerce Ministry’s proactive and transparent roadmap, and extended heartfelt thanks to Minister Goyal for his commitment to reshaping India’s global trade trajectory.
