Patna: In a bold move seen as a strategic pre-election initiative, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday announced a slew of welfare measures aimed at journalists, common citizens, and job seekers. Leading the announcements was a sharp increase in pensions for senior journalists under the Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Yojana.
Journalists who were earlier receiving a monthly pension of ₹6,000 will now get ₹15,000—a 150% hike. In case of the death of a pensioned journalist, the surviving spouse will now be eligible for a monthly pension of ₹10,000, up from ₹3,000, for life.
“This is not just an economic decision—it’s a moral responsibility,” said the Chief Minister, emphasizing the vital role journalists play in upholding democracy. “They are the fourth pillar of our system, and we want to ensure they live with dignity even after retirement,” he added. The decision has been officially conveyed to the concerned departments and will come into immediate effect.
This announcement comes just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, and political observers see it as a calculated move to consolidate support among intellectuals and media professionals.
Alongside the journalists’ pension reforms, the state government unveiled a broader welfare package:
A massive employment push was also announced, with the Bihar government promising 1 crore government jobs and related employment opportunities over the next five years, aimed at youth and rural populations.
Monthly pensions for senior citizens, widows, and persons with disabilities have been raised from ₹400 to ₹1,100.
Free electricity for all households up to 125 units per month, effective August 1, 2025. Consumers will begin receiving benefits from their July billing cycle itself.
