New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on Wednesday for a high-level two-nation diplomatic tour, visiting the United Kingdom and Maldives. The visit is aimed at strengthening strategic partnerships, enhancing economic cooperation, and deepening India’s ties with key global and regional allies.
In a statement issued before departure, PM Modi expressed confidence that the tour will “yield meaningful outcomes” and said that India’s relations with both countries are rooted in mutual respect, trust, and shared goals.
First Leg: United Kingdom (July 23–24)
PM Modi will first visit the United Kingdom at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This will be Modi’s fourth visit to the UK and the first since Starmer assumed office.
Calling the UK “a key partner in India’s global engagement,” Modi noted that both countries share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has expanded rapidly in recent years across multiple sectors such as trade, innovation, defence, health, education, and green technology.
During the visit, the two leaders are expected to hold extensive bilateral talks, focusing on accelerating the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations and exploring new areas of collaboration in artificial intelligence, semiconductor development, and renewable energy.
“Through this visit, we aim to chart a roadmap for deeper economic cooperation that benefits the people of both countries through job creation, sustainable growth, and innovation,” Modi stated.
Second Leg: Maldives (July 25–26)
In the second leg of his tour, PM Modi will visit the Maldives on a State Visit at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu. This will be his third visit to the Maldives and the first foreign Head of Government visit under President Muizzu’s administration.
A major highlight of the visit will be PM Modi attending the 60th Independence Day celebrations of Maldives as the Guest of Honour on July 26. The occasion also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The visit holds particular significance in the context of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the broader maritime vision of MAHASAGAR, which focuses on regional security, blue economy, and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean Region.
