New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his constitutional post on Monday, citing health concerns. In a formal letter submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
The resignation brings an abrupt end to Dhankhar’s tenure, which began in August 2022. A prominent political figure and former Governor of West Bengal, Dhankhar served as the 14th Vice President of India, during a phase he described as a “transformative era in the nation’s history.”
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period,” Dhankhar stated in his letter. He added that serving in such a period of transformation was “a true honour.”
