In Massive Pre-Poll Push, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Announces 125 Units of Free Electricity for 1.67 Crore Families

Patna: In a major pre-election move set to impact millions, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday announced a new electricity relief scheme that will offer 125 units of power free of cost to all domestic consumers across the state starting August 1. The scheme is expected to benefit nearly 1.67 crore households, easing the financial burden of electricity bills on middle- and lower-income families.

The initiative marks a significant shift in Bihar’s power subsidy strategy. While the existing Kutir Jyoti Yojana already offers subsidised electricity to rural users at nominal rates—Rs 1.97 per unit for the poorest and Rs 2.52 for other rural users—the new scheme eliminates the cost altogether for consumption up to 125 units. In urban areas, where the effective per-unit charge is currently Rs 4.52 after subsidy, this move will bring similar financial relief.

The announcement also includes a strong push for renewable energy. Nitish Kumar revealed that the state government plans to install solar power systems on rooftops or in public spaces over the next three years, with the goal of generating up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy. The installations will be free for families under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, while others will receive substantial support.

The Chief Minister emphasized that this dual approach—providing immediate relief through free electricity and long-term sustainability through solar infrastructure—will strengthen Bihar’s energy resilience and economic equity.
