Maharashtra to Set Up Automatic Weather Stations in Every Village Under WINDS Project for Precise Forecasting

Mumbai: In a major boost for weather prediction and agricultural planning, the Maharashtra government has announced that every village in the state will soon have its own automatic weather station (AWS).

The initiative, part of the central government’s Weather Information Network Data System (WINDS) project, aims to improve the accuracy and timeliness of weather data available to farmers and citizens.

Currently, Maharashtra maintains AWS installations at the revenue circle level. However, in a fresh Government Resolution (GR), the state has decided to expand the network to cover every single village. Officials believe this move will empower farmers to better plan sowing, irrigation, and harvesting while also benefiting disaster preparedness and rural communities at large.

State authorities underlined that more granular weather information could help prevent crop losses and enhance resilience against extreme weather conditions, especially with erratic monsoons and climate change posing persistent threats.
