13 Killed by Lightning in Bihar; CM Nitish Kumar Announces Rs 4 Lakh Compensation, Urges Caution

Patna: In a tragic turn of events, thirteen people lost their lives across multiple districts in Bihar over the last 24 hours due to lightning strikes triggered by severe weather, state authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

According to the official report, fatalities occurred in Buxar (4 deaths), West Champaran (3), Katihar (2), and one each in Kaimur, Lakhisarai, and Sitamarhi districts. The state has been witnessing turbulent monsoon activity, with sudden thunderstorms becoming increasingly frequent.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his deep grief and extended condolences to the affected families. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said: “It is sad that in the last 24 hours, four persons have died in Buxar, 3 in West Champaran, 2 in Katihar, 1 in Kaimur, 1 in Lakhisarai and 1 in Sitamarhi due to lightning. Instructions have been given to immediately give ₹4 lakh as ex-gratia to the families of the deceased.”

In light of the incident, CM Kumar has directed the Disaster Management Department to expedite compensation and has urged citizens to remain vigilant during stormy weather.

“People are appealed to be fully cautious during bad weather. To protect yourself from lightning, follow the suggestions issued from time to time by the Disaster Management Department. Stay indoors during bad weather and stay safe,” he added.

The state government has also reiterated its advisory to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, seek shelter in safe buildings, and avoid using electrical appliances during lightning storms.
